Hoglund Family | Gas Works Park | Seattle Family Photographer

Being a great photographer requires a bit of magic. When a great magician is performing, you don’t even see the trick. There’s just that “voila!” moment when my clients see their images for the first time and I can almost hear them saying, “Wow, how did that happen”?

I could tell Rachel was nervous that Liam wasn’t performing well during their Gas Works Park family session a couple weeks ago. “Everyone always looks so happy in your pictures,” she said with concern. I reassured her over and over that things were going well and I was getting great shots but I know it’s hard to believe me when your toddler isn’t doing what you think they should be doing (i.e. looking at the camera, smiling, sitting still). How do you take someone seriously when they’re sprawled out on the concrete taking pictures with one hand? Did she really just toss a ball in the air, clap, make funny noises and stillll get a good picture? Yes. Yes, I did.  And I can confidently say, “Rachel, your family looks really happy too.” You don’t even need a magic wand to see that.

Rachel, Eric and Liam, thank you for a delightful, sunny morning at Gas Works Park. I had so much fun getting to know you, rolling around in the grass, and watching your family love on each other. Thank you for choosing me to be your family photographer. It’s truly an honor.

Bridgette - I adore the close up of baby Liam eating that rice cake, cookie thingy bob.=)

Kaitlyn | Newborn | Seattle Family Photographer

My life right now isn’t nearly as exciting or exhausting as it must be for a family who just welcomed a second baby into their home. But the truth is, my life is cycling through some major transitions and I think I might know what it feels like to be delighted and energized, filled up and lifted up, even when you are working hard. Even when you are exhausted. A new baby, a new life, the next chapter of a “choose your own adventure” story. They all come with those days where you’re too exhausted to sleep and too excited to think. I’m discovering self awareness in the chaos and an upgrade to the way my heart and soul processes the world around me. I’m learning that I’m more capable and powerful than I ever realized and that makes me feel more confident to love joyfully and work smarter instead of harder.

This session, like all my sessions, gives me the unique opportunity of being a spectator in a room full of wisdom. I watch as people love and relax; teach and share; laugh and scream. So many ways to communicate, savor and dream. The second baby requires just as much work as the first but the parents seem much less concerned about screwing up. They know which mistakes must be avoided and which disasters are easily resolved. No sleep, is a game they’ve perfected and where they were once tentative and awkward about the first tiny being they held in their arms, they’ve now learned to do it one handed while flipping laundry and being crashed into by a toddler all while singing the ABC’s and updating the social network. They’ve learned that this path is most easily followed when their heart leads the way and the lessons are slowly discovered in layers.

Julie and Sam, congratulations on your newest edition. Kaitlyn is a doll, just like her big sister. Thank you for so many opportunities to be your family photographer and watch your family grow. It’s truly an honor.

Kelsey - Her sleepy smile is so precious. Great photos.

Jeanine Carlson - I want another one!

Kalkofen Family Portraits | Eugene Family Photographer

About six weeks ago the Kalkofen Family hosted me for what I like to call a “sleepover session”. I packed my bags for the weekend and drove down to Eugene, OR and spent the next 48hrs experiencing a “day in their life”. We ate crepes and bought pie at the Eugene Saturday Market, hiked around Skinner Butte Lookout and slid down the giant ‘O’ on the hillside overlooking downtown Eugene. We played in Hendricks Park amongst six thousand varieties of rhododendrons and visited the University of Oregon stadium decked out in Ducks gear. In between, there were snuggles and morning cartoons at home, tasty dinners followed by board games, and quiet evenings in the backyard.

This is a kind of portrait shoot with no real start and end time. Because “portrait shoot” this is not. It’s a documentary shoot. A glimpse into the life story of a family so in love with one another.

Kat and Rob, thank you for welcoming me into your lives. You allowed me to observe and document and get to know you and your gorgeous family. I had the most wonderful two days with you and hope that this glimpse helps you realize (if you don’t already) the preciousness of life you possess and live. It was an absolute pleasure to really get to know you all, and I hope you had as good of a time as I did.

Katerina Kalkofen - Jamie~ I am absolutely THRILLED with the way the pics turned out! Thank you so much for the care you took to capture the energies of each of us! You are extremely talented and I will highly recommend you to anyone I know that is looking for professional pictures! Much love, Kat Kalkofen

Heather Hatcher - These pictures are stunning!! It helps that the Kalkofen family is super adorable, but the photography here is outstanding!!

Kameron | Brand New | Seattle Newborn Photographer

I was driving back from Oregon after a fun-filled weekend of photo shoots, farmers markets and meeting new friends and families. My love tank was full…overfull if you believe that’s possible. And the day wasn’t even done. There was just enough time to stop at home to shower before I headed back out to meet one of the newest members of the universe, Baby Kameron James. In a matter of hours I would be thoroughly blissed out.

Has it really been a year since their engagement photos at the Arboretum? I remember sitting in Erica and Robert’s living room last summer looking through their wedding portraits and planning their album when Erica let it slip that she thought she might be pregnant. Sure enough, just a short time later is was Facebook official. No matter how many times I hear that news or meet a newborn babe, I’m still in absolute wonder at the whole amazing process of creating a human being and delivering it to the world.

Those first few days at home with a new family are extraordinarily special to witness and I like to get in and capture it all as early as possible. Watching them, watching him. Holding our collective breath in anticipation of every nose scrunch, eye flutter, toe curl and back arch. At just a few days old, Kameron was wide awake and bright eyed for his very first photo shoot. Tiny fingers. Cute little ears. Soft little nose. Every inch of his almost 20″ frame was inspected through my lens so they’d never forget the beautiful tininess of what one can only imagine will be a very big life.

Erica and Robert, thank you for sharing so many important milestones with me. It has been so inspiring to watch your love and family grow all of these years. I can’t wait to  see you for another round of family portraits soon.:)

Ryan & Khemmy | Married | Seattle Wedding Photographer

I’ve been to many, many, many weddings but the punch line still gets me every time. Two crazy kids, drunk on love, make a powerful commitment to each other, kiss, and I cry. Every time. The day Ryan and Khemmy got married was no different. With their very closest friends and family crowded into the living room of Ryan’s parent’s home, I witnessed the beginning of the next chapter of their Love Story. And oh what a story it has been! It’s one that stretches over continents and involves the largest stack of printed emails between two people I’ve ever seen in my life. Again, the tears.

Ryan and Khemmy, many thanks for trusting me to capture your special day. I wish you all the best and a lifetime of happiness in your new home in California. Please don’t forget to call me when you get started on the next chapter. Those babies are going to be beautiful.;)

(P.S. To view more of Ryan and Khemmy’s wedding day, please watch the slide show at the end of this post. If you were a guest at the wedding, please contact Ryan and Khemmy directly for access to their password protected online gallery which includes all of the family formals and everything in between.)

Discovery Park | Extended Family Portraits | Seattle Modern Family Photographer

It was a beautiful day. One of the nicest we’ve had in months. It was so perfect, really. When I pulled up to the vacation home that housed this extended family of ten gorgeous individuals from Victoria, Canada, Brooklyn, NY and Tacoma, WA on Easter weekend, I was greeted warmly with smiles and love. We walked a few blocks in the sunshine to Discovery Park and had some wonderful talks about life abroad, family dynamics and great wine.

Clearly the newest member of their family was the star of the show. No one could keep their eyes off of him and his cuteness. It certainly helped to create some great smiles and belly laughs. And what a workout we got! Hiking up and down hills, spinning in circles, picking flowers, digging in the dirt, playing chase, and every kids favorite game of 1-2-3 swing! It was madness…and blissful…and absolutely perfect.

When we finally made it back to their weekend home, a bottle of wine was cracked and I was invited to stay and relax. How wonderful it is to spend an intimate afternoon with people who start out as strangers and quickly become friends you want to know forever. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for opening up to me the way you did and allowing my images to become a part of your family’s history. It’s truly an honor.

Jen Sharon - Love all your latest sessions! This one’s inspiring me right now, because I have an extended family session coming up, and they can be tricky. Love this session!

Josh, Jeanine & Liam | Family Engagement Pictures | Seattle Modern Family Photographer

Love is in the air, Friends. Can you feel it?? It’s springtime and I feel change, growth and twitterpation around every corner. New brides are booking engagement sessions and I’m having a ball capturing that lovey, dovey, gushy, goodness of couples on their way to wedded bliss.

Josh and Jeanine are one of my special families that have been around since the beginning of my adventures in photography. I remember the day they told me they were pregnant and I remember watching her grow and glow as they became baby married. I remember visiting little Liam in the hospital when he was born and taking some of the very first pictures of their new family. And now, they’re doing the next big thing with wedding plans a brewin for this coming November. It’s gonna be one hell of a party, let me tell ya. I’m beyond excited and honored to be trusted with telling their story in photographs that will become a part of their family history. It’s truly amazing.

The day of our session was a wet one so we jumped to plan C and ended up at the Conservatory at Volunteer Park. Greenhouses make a great, dry background! So does the water tower we hiked up and the covered benches with all those great lines I love. And we did get lucky with some sun breaks. Puddle jumping, sun soaking, cuddling, whispering, laughing and loving. It was an afternoon made for lovers, adventures, breathing in fresh life and celebrating family.

Josh and Jeanine, it’s been an absolute delight to watch you fall more in love with time. The addition of Liam has made you an even more beautiful couple and I can’t wait to watch you become husband and wife this November. Enjoy your love story…

Jeanine Carlson - I am so happy with these, Jamie! Thank you!!

Joshua - Jamie,

I love these photos! I can’t wait to have some prints to frame! Great work, so excited to have you taking photos at our wedding, too!

Joshua
