Seagulls

We live near the water so these gulls are everywhere. At the beach they pose for pictures and let you get close – but not too close.

On the ferry ride home a passenger supplies a feast for these rats with wings. In a moment dozens of them head our way. Swarming and diving towards the deck most of the humans run for cover. It’s a very eerie thing to watch a flock of birds swarm around your head.

Imagine me all by my lonesome on the deck of a ferry oblivious to the world beyond my lens. I stand still so as not to disturb them but my camera tracks them with speed. Screaming at eachother and racing towards breadcrumbs they accept me there. Food wins over fear.

They may not be the prettiest birds but watching something FLY is always kind of beautiful.

They were so close. THIS close. No telephoto lens needed here.

And this guy! What a ham. He wanted to show off his wings and frankly, I would too.

I wonder what he’s thinking as we stare at eachother. But the blowhorn breaks our trance and it’s time to return to the car. He flies with his friends and I share his portrait with mine.

Jennifer - I love to watch sea birds. They are poetry in motion. Perfectly designed for flight acrobatics.
He really is checking you out in that last photo :-)

Andie - Heehee, “and I share his portrait with mine”…love that!

Grey Street Girl - These are great shots! I can’t believe you didn’t have to use a telephoto with that one shot. Great job!

MGF - I can not believe that they get so close- crazy

Georgia - Wow, Jamie! These are amazing! I especially LOVE the first and the second to the last shots.

I’m also jealous of where you live! It is very beautiful there.

leaca - gorgeous shots…all of them.

Johanna - Gulls Rule!

robin bird - being allowed to watch something fly is like getting free driving lessons for the next world! very graceful shots, i also love seeing the underside of those wings…see not so much a rat as a curious and would-be bird friend :)

Clare - I love that second picture! It’s like a police line up….”Ok, maam, which one in the line pooped on your car….”

Clare’s last blog post..Not exactly sugarplums…
