Our Stories

“All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I’ve been
And how I got to where I am
But these stories don’t mean anyting
When you’ve got no one to tell them to…”

Lycrics from “The Story” by Brandi Carlile

I went out to lunch with my mom the other day and she told me the news of how she’ll be taking off three weeks from work in February to finish her book. HER BOOK! Someone wants to publish words from my mother onto pages that people will buy and read. She’s so cool and I’m so proud of her.

She asked me if I was still planning on going back to school (something I threaten to do every 6 months or so). I told her what most moms probably fear hearing, “No, I just want to figure out how to get paid to blog and take pictures.” Normally I would get “the mom look” but she just smiled and told me I was a good writer. “You write a lot like your grandma and I do.” I consider that to be a huge compliment.

My great-grandfather wrote poems. My great-grandmother wroter the story of her life with the help of my grandmother. My grandmother has lots of short stories I’ve never seen or read and my mother has dozens of stories she’s written that can be compared to what you might see in todays blogs.

Everyday I set out to write or take pictures and create something for this blog. My work is viewed by hundreds everyday. But most of their stories are tucked away in boxes and journals and have been seen by few. I’m grateful for this outlet to tell my stories and I hope I can convince my mom and grandma to let me share some of theirs.

PS Brandi Carlile’s voice is AMAZING and her lyrics are profound. You should check her out.

Georgia - how cool! my mom has written several books, and has had one published. you must be so proud. well, of course you are! that’s why you posted this! :)

love these shots of the vintage typewriter!

donna - Oh I wish I had a typewriter like that.It seems to make writing as much of a physical process as a mental one. And how great for you to have so much inspiration within your own family!

Grey Street Girl - First, great typewriter! Second, Brandi Carlile is awesome. Finally, you should definitely try to write your own stories and, along with your gorgeous photography, you could really do something special. It’s in your blood!

renee @ FIMBY - couple thoughts… I love brandi carlile, love, love, love. In fact I think I’ll go listen now.

“No, I just want to figure out how to get paid to blog and take pictures.” – me too except that I have a full time job that is impossible (nor do I want to) quit.

Kirsten - Oh I love old typewriters like that…I used to have one set up in my apartment and my rule was that anyone who entered must write a line…about anything…and it was always so interesting to see what people would come up with.
Blogs are so cool and inspiring…and your pictures are always the best touch!

Stacy - That is wonderful that your mom is going to publish a book. I can’t imagine the feeling of accomplishment she has from that.

Blogging is such a great outlet, isn’t it?

Love these shots, too. :)

Diane - Congratulations to your Mom. It’s an exciting time for her. I hope you continue to hold onto your dream of being paid for your writing and for your photography — it CAN happen. If you begin making plans now, it can happens soon! Bravo to you and your mom.

leaca - The Story is one of my favorite songs.

Andie - You and me…we are a pair! Yes, whenever I think my creative stuff is crap, I threaten to go back to school. To get a degree in something “useful”, lol. Know what though…you should keep doing what your doing (as I am trying to) and make those dreams come true.

Your really amazing at it. Your photographs, your words, always bring me to my knees. Love them and you friend.
